What is Natural Gas?

Gaseous natural gas is found underground at different depths and geographical formations in a gaseous form, as its name implies. Because it is produced locally, Pakistan’s energy supply is not affected by foreign price fluctuations or foreign supply disruptions. In addition to being odorless and colorless, natural gas consists predominantly of methane. In order to transport natural gas to consumers, impurities are removed from the gas before it is introduced into the pipeline system.

Spraying a harmless odorant into advanced gases prior to distribution is a crucial safety measure. This added scent ensures that any potential leaks can be swiftly detected preventing unsafe situations.

Natural gas boasts inherent safety features beyond its distinctive "rotten egg" smell. In the event of a leak, it naturally rises and disperses into the atmosphere, as it is lighter than air. Furthermore, ignition can only occur when natural gas mixes with air within a specific range of 4% to 14%. Beyond this range, it will not ignite. Additionally, it requires a substantial amount of heat, at least 1200 degrees Fahrenheit, to catch fire.

Once combusted, natural gas emerges as one of the cleanest energy sources available today. The only emissions resulting from its combustion are carbon dioxide and water vapor. In recent years, natural gas has gained prominence as the preferred fuel for a wide array of applications, encompassing residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, thanks to its eco-friendly combustion characteristics.

History of Sui Gas

In Pakistan, the gas used in homes and industries, commonly referred to as Sui Gas, is, in fact, Natural Gas. Its name is attributed to the Sui Gas Field, a prominent gas field owned by Pakistan Petroleum Limited, situated about 650 kilometers from Karachi in Dera Bugti, Balochistan. The Sui Gas Field holds a central role in Pakistan's gas production, housing the country's largest gas compressor station and purification system.
